What Printing Options Are Available for Wholesale Coffee Packaging?
Wholesale coffee packaging can be printed with digital, flexographic, rotogravure, CMYK process, Pantone spot colors, metallic inks, foil stamping, and selective varnish. Digital printing suits smaller multi-SKU orders because plates or engraved cylinders are not required, while flexographic and gravure printing become more economical as repeat volume rises. Four-color CMYK handles photographs and gradients; spot colors improve repeatability for brand colors. ISO 12647-6:2020 covers four-color flexographic process control for packaging and was confirmed again in 2025. Material also matters: clear, kraft, metallized, and mono-material films require different white-ink and finishing arrangements.
Printing method should be matched to the number of designs before comparing a price per pouch. A buyer ordering 20,000 bags as one design has a different production profile from a buyer ordering the same 20,000 bags across 8 SKUs at 2,500 units each. Digital equipment can switch artwork without producing a separate flexographic plate set or gravure cylinder set for every design, so brands with changing origins, roast profiles, seasonal releases, or several bag sizes can keep each printed batch smaller.
That advantage becomes less important when one design is repeated at much larger volume. Flexographic printing uses relief plates and is widely used for flexible films, labels, paper and packaging. ISO 12647-6:2020 specifically covers four-color flexographic printing for flexible packages and also addresses spot-color communication, giving buyers a recognized framework for discussing proofing, color aims and repeat production with a converter.
A quotation should separate artwork count, printing process, plate or cylinder charges, bag construction and finishing. A low bag price is difficult to compare when one supplier includes 8 printed designs while another quotation covers only 1.
Rotogravure uses engraved cylinders, normally one cylinder for each printing color or image separation required by the job. Cylinder preparation adds an upfront charge, but the same cylinders can normally be reused when dimensions and artwork remain unchanged. A stable 100,000-unit SKU can therefore distribute setup cost across far more units than ten 10,000-unit designs, while a redesign may require new cylinders for the affected separations.
Flexography follows similar economics but uses plates rather than engraved gravure cylinders. Modern flexo can reproduce process color, spot color, fine typography and screened images on packaging films, yet output depends on plate imaging, anilox selection, ink, substrate and press control. The current ISO flexographic standard is the third edition, published in September 2020 and reviewed and confirmed in 2025, so buyers can ask whether a printer works to defined colorimetric targets instead of approving color only from a laptop screen.

Color specification deserves separate attention because printing technology and color system are not the same thing. CMYK uses 4 process colors—cyan, magenta, yellow and black—to reproduce photographs, gradients and multicolor illustrations. A package may also add 1 or 2 spot colors for a logo that has to remain visually consistent across coffee bags, cartons and labels.
Pantone references help communicate a target color, but a Pantone number does not guarantee an identical appearance on every material. Brown kraft, opaque white film, clear PET and metallized film reflect light differently; matte coatings can also make the same printed color look less saturated than a gloss surface. A physical proof produced on a comparable substrate is more useful than judging production color from an RGB monitor.
Clear packaging adds another production layer because ordinary process inks may remain partly transparent. A printer can place white ink beneath selected graphics so a red logo, white text or light-colored illustration remains opaque while another section stays transparent as a product window. Artwork therefore needs separate instructions for process color, white ink and unprinted transparent areas rather than one flattened image.
Metallized structures reverse part of that logic. Instead of covering the entire metallic surface, designers can use white ink beneath normal colors and leave selected areas without white backing so the metallic appearance remains visible. A silver film can therefore produce metallic-looking letters or borders without printing a separate silver ink, although the prepress file must clearly identify which areas receive white, color or no ink.
Kraft-based packaging also changes color reproduction. Printing a pale beige, yellow or pastel directly over brown paper will not look like the same color printed on white film. White ink can create an opaque base, but it adds another printed separation. A simpler artwork using black, dark green or other high-contrast colors may reduce the number of separations while keeping small text readable.
Finishing can then be added after the basic color plan is set. Matte and gloss appearances may come from the outer film, coating or varnish system; selective gloss can place contrast over a logo while the rest of the bag stays matte. Hot foil stamping uses heat, pressure and foil rather than ordinary CMYK ink, so a reflective gold mark should not be quoted as though it were simply a fifth process color.
For wholesale coffee packaging, decorative printing also has to fit the physical bag. A typical pre-made coffee pouch may combine printed laminate, zipper, side or bottom gusset, heat-seal zones and a one-way degassing valve. Moving a logo only 15 mm can place it closer to a zipper or fold, so the supplier's production dieline should be used before artwork is approved.

Packaging regulations can also affect material and print specifications. Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste began applying on 12 August 2026, while several provisions phase in later. The European Commission states that packaging placed on the EU market is expected to meet recyclability requirements from 2030, with recyclability grades A, B or C used under the regulation and stricter requirements scheduled later.
That schedule matters when a coffee brand expects a printed format to remain in use for 3 to 5 years. Adding incompatible decorative layers, labels, adhesives or material combinations can affect how a package is assessed within a recycling stream. The European Commission reports packaging waste above 180 kg per person annually in the EU, while earlier EU targets called for at least 65% of packaging waste by weight to be recycled by the end of 2025 and 70% by 2030.
A mono-material pouch does not automatically print like a conventional PET/PE laminate. Surface treatment, ink adhesion, heat resistance and sealing behavior need to be checked with the converter using the proposed structure. Print decoration should be specified together with the actual film structure, not added after the material has already been selected. That approach also makes environmental claims easier to document against the packaging actually supplied.
Food-contact use adds another boundary. Coffee normally contacts the inner sealant layer rather than the printed outer surface, so printers commonly place graphics on the exterior or reverse-print them within a laminate. Buyers should request compliance documentation for the complete packaging construction used in the destination market instead of assuming that an ink described as “food packaging ink” covers the complete bag.
Cost comparison becomes clearer when every supplier quotes the same production scenario. Consider 6 SKUs with annual demand of 12,000 bags each: the total is 72,000 bags, but it is not commercially equivalent to one 72,000-bag artwork. A conventional process may require 6 separate plate or cylinder sets, while digital production can change the file between SKUs without equivalent conventional tooling.

An apparent saving of 5% per bag can disappear when production requires buying 12 months of packaging at once and artwork changes after 4 months. A bag carrying an old certification mark, changed net weight or discontinued coffee origin cannot normally be reassigned to another SKU, so unused printed stock should be included when comparing long-run printing against smaller repeated batches.
Proof approval is the last place where numbers should replace vague descriptions. Confirm bag dimensions in millimeters, artwork version number, quantity, color references, finish, zipper position, valve position and print orientation on the purchase approval. If a brand color is important, retain one approved production sample from the first run and use it as the visual reference for the next order rather than relying on a PDF generated months earlier.
A buyer choosing among digital, flexographic and gravure printing can therefore start with volume per artwork rather than total company volume. A business purchasing 120,000 bags across 12 designs has an average of 10,000 units per design; another purchasing 120,000 bags in one design has a very different setup profile. Material, white ink, spot colors, finishing and future artwork revisions can then be priced against the same quantity structure instead of treating all 120,000 bags as one printing job.
